Girona is at the centre of Miquel Barcons’s plans for local football. The Catalan Football Federation’s territorial delegate in Girona has said he wants Girona FC back in La Liga, Olot promoted to Primera RFEF, and stronger support for smaller clubs across the province, according to an interview with Diari de Girona.

Barcons took up the role in November and said he accepted because football is “his world” and he has the time to dedicate to it. He previously served as sub-delegate in La Garrotxa and described himself as a former “explosive left winger”, with spells at Santa Pau and Banyoles, where he said he scored 30 goals in three months in the old Tercera Regional.

His approach is centred on helping smaller clubs, which he believes need more support than the bigger ones. He said he spends time during the week meeting club presidents to hear their needs and answer questions, rather than focusing only on match days. For more local football coverage, see our news page.

Barcons also said it is a challenge to stay in contact with all 180 teams in the area. He confirmed his support for Joan Soteras, the current FCF president, whom he described as “a very good person who is always direct” and someone who has shown him a lot of trust. He also explained that he replaced the existing sub-delegates with his own team when he arrived, saying the move was logical because the previous group was aligned with his predecessor, Jordi Bonet.

His new team includes Jordi Freixa in Baix Empordà, Oriol Vila in La Selva, Jordi Baró and Xavi Tubert in Alt Empordà, Marc Fresneda in Pla de l’Estany, and Eudald Noia in Ripollès. Barcons himself covers La Garrotxa. He said he would stay on if Soteras wins the 2027 elections and wants him to continue, but would step down if Bonet were to win.

Barcons also addressed the wider politics of the federation, saying he is not focused on the judicial disputes and internal tensions that have affected the FCF. He said he is new to the role and prefers to concentrate on doing his job well and helping clubs. On Girona FC, he described relegation to Segunda División as a “very hard blow” for the province and said it is a privilege to have the provincial capital in La Liga. He also said he would like to see more Girona-born players at the club, mentioning Joel and Arnau from the academy.

Looking ahead, Barcons said his ideal picture for Girona football would be Girona FC in La Liga, Olot in Primera RFEF, and Figueres or Palamós in Segunda or Tercera RFEF. He also said women’s football continues to grow in Girona, with licences reaching a record 21,044 last season and that figure already being surpassed this year.
