Cambrils is now home to Mercadona’s first Tienda 9 supermarket, a €3 million renovation on Nova Augusta avenue that brings the chain’s latest store model to Tarragona. The company says the redesign gives more space to fresh products and aims to improve the shopping experience.
The project involved 25 supplier companies during the works. Mercadona says it expects to have about 60 Tienda 9 model supermarkets across Spain by the end of 2026. For readers following wider retail coverage in Catalonia, see our news page.
The new layout changes the store from a section-based format to one organised by processes. According to the company, this is meant to make restocking easier, improve staff coordination and create a more intuitive route for shoppers.
A central feature is the Obrador Central, or Central Workshop, where fresh products are cut, cooked and packaged. Mercadona says this setup frees up more space for displaying fresh items and helps it use internal resources more efficiently.
The store also includes measures aimed at energy efficiency and sustainability, such as refrigeration systems designed to reduce cold loss in aisles, the use of CO₂ as a refrigerant, and updated technical equipment and installations. The company estimates these changes could cut energy use by up to 10% and water use by up to 40%.
Other features include a customer rest area, a car park with 159 spaces, some for electric vehicles, and 38 bicycle spaces. The supermarket is open Monday to Saturday, from 9am to 9pm in winter and until 9:30pm in summer. Mercadona says this opening is part of a wider plan to renovate stores between 2026 and 2033, with a total announced investment of €3.7 billion.
