Barcelona has named Marta Vidal as president of the DO Cava Regulatory Council, according to a statement from the organisation on Thursday. She will serve a four-year term.

The appointment matters for cava producers across Catalonia because the council sets the sector's common rules and direction. For wineries, that can affect how the denomination is managed, how the brand is positioned, and how the industry presents itself in export markets.

According to DO Cava, Vidal is the first woman to lead the regulatory council. The organisation said she wants to build a shared vision for the sector and strengthen cava's standing.

Vidal has spent much of her career in banking, and since 2017 she has been chief executive of the Vallformosa winery. The council said her appointment was confirmed by its plenary session.

The change takes effect immediately, with Vidal set to lead the council for the next four years. Anyone who works in cava production, distribution, or export can check the official DO Cava website for further announcements.
