Workers' protest photo on public display

The lobby of Reus Town Hall, known locally as the Palau Municipal, is hosting a photographic artwork titled Obrers en un míting (Workers at a Rally) by Manel Armengol. The piece, taken in Barcelona during the Spanish Transition period, documents worker mobilisations and forms part of the archive of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona (MACBA). The display runs until 30 November 2026 and is part of the wider project Un museu fora del museu (A Museum Outside the Museum), promoted by the Department of Culture of the Generalitat and MACBA. The initiative brings around 40 works from the museum’s collection to unconventional public spaces across more than 20 towns in Catalonia.

Art in everyday spaces

In Reus, the project is coordinated by the Centre d'Art Cal Massó. Works are installed in locations such as bakeries, hairdressers, sports changing rooms, waiting rooms and municipal buildings to bring contemporary art into daily life. The Reus display is one of several across Catalonia, with other venues including cemeteries in Lleida, pharmacies in Cardedeu and a coffee shop in Barcelona. All works are exhibition-quality copies made for conservation reasons. The selection of artworks and host spaces was made jointly by participating art centres and the MACBA Collection and Archive team. The project is curated by Martí Manen and forms part of MACBA’s 30th anniversary celebrations.

This initiative allows us to expand access to culture in our city through non-traditional spaces.

Daniel Recasens, councillor for Culture and Linguistic Policy in Reus, said the town’s participation supports broader cultural access. "The collaboration with Cal Massó enables us to continue expanding opportunities for residents to engage with contemporary art," he said.

The public can view Obrers en un míting in the Reus Town Hall lobby during regular opening hours. More details about the Un museu fora del museu project are available on the official MACBA website.
