Lloret de Mar has the highest proportion of recent arrivals to Catalonia among municipalities with more than 20,000 residents, according to updated figures from Idescat, Catalonia's official statistics institute. The data put the share at 24.1%, meaning almost one in four people living in the Costa Brava town had moved to Catalonia during the preceding five years.
For Lloret residents, the figure describes a rapidly changing registered population, a factor relevant to municipal planning for local services and infrastructure. Residents and local organisations can check the scope and methodology of the official Migratory Movements statistics, which record changes of residence involving Catalan municipalities, the rest of Spain and abroad.
Lloret ranks ahead of Salou and Barcelona
Lloret de Mar, in the Selva comarca, ranked ahead of Salou at 23.2% and Barcelona at 21.1% in the comparison of municipalities above 20,000 inhabitants.
The measure concerns residents who arrived in Catalonia during the five-year period, rather than only people born outside Spain or those holding a foreign nationality. Idescat's migration series is compiled annually and, since 2021, uses the Spanish National Statistics Institute's Migrations and Changes of Residence Statistics file.
Separate Idescat population figures show that Girona province had 830,429 residents in 2025, including 181,899 foreign nationals, or 21.9% of the population. That total rose by 4,263 people from 2024.
How residents can check the figures
Idescat publishes migration data by municipality, comarca, province and Catalonia. Readers seeking figures for a particular area can use its Migratory Movements database and select the relevant geographic level.
