Lleida’s Ponent Penitentiary Centre holds 81 inmates whose main offence is gender violence, according to data from the Catalan Ministry of Justice for April. Of these, 42 are serving time for breaching sentences or measures such as restraining orders or bans on contacting victims, which means they are repeat offenders in this type of violence.
Most of the inmates are serving shorter sentences. Seven in 10 have terms of up to five years. Ten prisoners are serving between five and 10 years, eight are serving between 10 and 15 years, and three have convictions of more than 15 years.
The same data also shows that eight inmates are held for homicide offences, either attempted or completed, and one for femicide within a couple, with a sentence of more than 15 years. More Catalonia news
