A man released from Ponent Penitentiary Centre in Lleida was arrested on Friday afternoon after an attempted robbery at a supermarket in the city. This arrest occurred despite a mid-April report that had warned of his risk of reoffending, according to La Vanguardia Catalonia.
The individual, who had completed a sentence for murder, was granted freedom by a judge. Following his release, the General Directorate of Penitentiary Affairs informed the Lleida Prosecutor's Office about the case. The Mossos d'Esquadra had stated they would carry out discreet, non-invasive surveillance to monitor him without infringing his rights as a free citizen.
Attempted Robbery and Arrest
The incident unfolded when a supermarket in Lleida's Segrià capital reported an attempted robbery. The man was reportedly carrying what appeared to be a fake pistol and managed to escape without completing the theft. When Mossos d'Esquadra officers arrived, security camera footage identified the individual as the recently released ex-prisoner.
Shortly after, the Guàrdia Urbana located and arrested him in the Pardinyes neighbourhood. The arrest highlights concerns raised by the earlier report regarding his potential to reoffend.
