Girona, former Girona FC forward Kiko Ratón has said he hopes the club can secure survival this season, 16 years after his penalty in Girona on 22 May 2010 helped keep the team in Segunda A.
Ratón, now 42, drew a clear link between that tense day and Girona’s current situation. His spot-kick against Murcia was his first and only goal for the club, and it prevented relegation to Segunda B.
The match has remained one of the most important in Girona FC’s history, according to Diari de Girona. Ratón’s goal also made him a lasting figure for supporters at Montilivi.
In an interview with El Periódico, he said: “I hope that an even more outlandish goal than mine saves Girona.” He added that the pressure in 2010 was immense, but the team secured the victory and the result changed his life.
Ratón also said he has “a lot of faith” in the current squad and believes they will fight until the end to achieve their objective. His comments come as Girona FC continue their battle to stay in the division.
