In Barcelona, Junts has asked Catalan president Salvador Illa to appear before parliament to explain government contracts with Chinese companies.

The party said it wants him to “give all explanations and clarify” the agreements, including contracts involving the technology firm Huawei. Junts also referred to the awarding of contracts for the “deployment and management” of fibre optic infrastructure to the Chinese company.

Junts said its request was based on “alleged transfers” received by former Spanish president José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero from Huawei. The party did not provide further details in its statement.

In a press release, Junts said it demands maximum transparency from Illa and considers it essential that he appears before parliament “with the utmost speed”.
