A year after the draw for the Illa Glòries public housing project in Barcelona, many successful applicants are still waiting to move into their new homes. The development, the largest in the city with 238 flats across four buildings, has seen a mixed experience for its future residents.
Around 70 keys for surface rights flats are yet to be handed over, according to residents. While nearly 30 keys are expected to be delivered this month, the remaining have no set date, causing uncertainty for some adjudicators. This includes buyers of the 67 homes in Block C, who are still awaiting their keys as the process extends beyond initial expectations.
Residents have reported delays and a lack of information. Miki, one of those affected, told betevé that the situation creates significant uncertainty, especially for those who have had to extend their current rental contracts due to the hold-up.
Accessibility and Technical Issues Reported
Enric and Laia, a couple with physical disabilities residing in Block D, reported accessibility problems just one month after moving in. Despite the building incorporating some adapted systems, they say essential elements remain unresolved. The main entrance door, for instance, has an automatic sensor for entry but not for exit. This means Laia, a wheelchair user, must rely on others every time she wishes to leave her home.
They also mentioned minor technical deficiencies within the flats, such as issues with water pressure, antenna reception, and incomplete internal installations. Municipal sources informed betevé that the Municipal Housing Institute is working to resolve these pending details as quickly as possible. Regarding the accessibility concerns, technicians are scheduled to review the magnetic opening and closing system of the entrance door next week.
Positive Experiences in Other Blocks
However, not all residents have faced the same challenges. In Blocks A and B, designated for rental and the first to be delivered, some residents have reported positive experiences. After several months of living there, they particularly highlight the opportunity to access affordable housing in a city where prices are continuously rising. Residents also praised the development's location and the chance to start a new chapter in new flats. Despite the incidents reported in some buildings and the unresolved delays, they generally consider the overall experience favourable.
