Around 60 homeless people have established themselves in two plots in the Pedrosa industrial estate in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, after being evicted from the Zona Franca area of Barcelona and the airport.
This move shows the problem of homelessness being displaced from one area to another, according to Diari Catalunya. The individuals had previously set up informal settlements in Barcelona before their removal.
Officials said that any response to informal settlements must include metropolitan housing policies, stable resources, and cross-municipal coordination. Without these measures, evictions simply move the problem, rather than solving it, according to a statement reported by Diari Catalunya.
The situation underscores the need for a broader strategy to address homelessness across the metropolitan area. Local authorities face the challenge of providing adequate support and housing solutions for a mobile population.
