Reus mayor Sandra Guaita has said she wants to seek another term leading the city, describing the PSC, ERC and Ara Reus coalition as a government of "agreement and work" in an interview published on Friday, 2 October.

For residents and businesses, the final stage of the current council term includes decisions still pending on public housing at the former Carrilet building, works at Mercat del Carrilet and the opening timetable for Bellissens station. Guaita said the coalition had spent its first two years preparing projects and was now in the delivery phase.

"There are projects that have been unblocked and we are very proud of them, but we have more proposals for the city," Guaita said when asked whether she wanted to remain mayor.

Coalition and next municipal term

Guaita said the three-party municipal government had worked well together and that its members listened to one another. The coalition is made up of the Socialist Party of Catalonia (PSC), Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC) and Ara Reus.

She said future municipal elections should be decided on local issues, rather than national or international political dynamics.

Projects affecting Carrilet, Bellissens and city-centre traffic

The mayor said an initial project for the former Guardia Urbana municipal police station could be presented this autumn. The council previously approved a planning change intended to prevent demolition of the building, which Guaita said should become a space to support activity in the neighbourhood.

  • At the former Carrilet building, the council’s priority is public housing, with municipal facilities planned for the ground floor. Guaita said the Casa de la Festa cultural venue could be among the possible uses.
  • A project for the Mercat del Carrilet building itself is due to be submitted by the end of 2026. Discussions with market traders on temporary relocation will continue once construction dates are known.
  • Guaita said Adif’s Bellissens station is now expected by the end of 2026 or the start of 2027, rather than September. She said the station would be particularly useful for residents in the area and students travelling into Reus.

On Doctor Robert street, Guaita defended the retractable bollard installed to restrict traffic. She said residents first requested action in 2021 after a child was nearly hit by a vehicle, and that the street had carried about 10,000 vehicles a day, including peaks of up to 800 in one hour.

She said traffic changes in the Muralla neighbourhood and on Roser street were intended to move vehicles towards higher-capacity routes such as the T-11 and major avenues.

Retail support and visitor figures

Responding to recent criticism from local trade groups, Guaita said Reus had allocated almost €850,000 to local-commerce campaigns. She said Reus Promoció, the municipal city-promotion agency, had increased its budget allocation by 34% since the coalition took office.

According to Guaita, visitor numbers at the Gaudí Centre rose by 22% in 2026 up to the summer. She also said use of municipal car parks had increased, while the council was developing a network of park-and-ride sites.

The mayor said the council had no timetable yet for the transfer of part of Adif’s railway-yard land to municipal ownership, despite a signed protocol. She said the council had requested a meeting in Madrid with the minister responsible.
