The University of Girona (UdG) is launching a pioneering postgraduate programme, "Large Carnivores: Ecology, Governance and Coexistence", to address the challenges of large carnivores returning to European territories. This new course aims to manage their coexistence with human activities, according to university officials.
Currently, no other specific university programme in Catalonia or Spain offers such a comprehensive approach to this issue. The UdG initiative seeks to provide a transversal perspective on the socio-environmental complexities involved.
Addressing Coexistence Challenges
The programme will cover the ecological aspects of large carnivores, their governance, and strategies for peaceful coexistence with local populations. This includes understanding their behaviour, managing their impact on livestock, and developing policies for conservation and conflict resolution. The university recognises the growing need for specialised knowledge in this field as species like bears and wolves expand their ranges.
The postgraduate course is designed to equip professionals with the tools necessary to tackle these complex interactions, fostering sustainable solutions for both wildlife and human communities.
