In Girona, the Provincial Court began hearing the case on Monday against 11 people accused of belonging to a criminal organisation that allegedly manufactured narco-boats in Alt Empordà. The network was dismantled in September 2022.

Prosecutors say the defendants made, stored, modified and launched several prohibited semi-rigid vessels between 2021 and 2022 for drug trafficking. The public prosecution says the group was fully hierarchical and showed a high degree of professionalisation.

The case is being heard in Girona, with the alleged activity centred in Alt Empordà. For more local reporting, see our news coverage.

According to the prosecution, the organisation supplied boats to other criminal organisations in Morocco, Portugal, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Spain. The alleged operation therefore extended well beyond Catalonia.

The accused face prison terms ranging from 5 to 11 years. The charges include membership of a criminal organisation, smuggling and offences against public health.
