Teachers across Catalonia, including in Girona, will strike tomorrow, 14 May 2026, to demand improvements in the education system. The walkout, organised by the Plataforma pels Serveis Públics (Platform for Public Services), coincides with a critical meeting between union representatives and Education Minister Anna Simó to unblock negotiations for the next academic year.

The mobilisation will take place in Girona, Barcelona, Tarragona, and Lleida. It follows several weeks of talks between unions and the department that have not yet resulted in an agreement on teachers' working conditions, class size reductions, or improved educational infrastructure.

The Plataforma pels Serveis Públics has called for all teachers and the general public to support their demands. Under the slogan 'Ens plantem!' (We stand firm!), teachers aim to highlight their discontent and determination to achieve a quality public education system.

Strike Coincides with Major Festival

Tomorrow's strike comes at a sensitive time, as it coincides with Girona's Temps de Flors (Time of Flowers) festival, an event that draws thousands of visitors to the city. Organisers hope the mobilisation will see massive participation and pressure the Education Department to accept their proposals.

Key demands from teachers include reducing student-to-teacher ratios, improving working conditions, hiring more support staff, and investing in educational infrastructure. They also seek greater pedagogical autonomy for schools and a fairer, more equitable evaluation of the education system.

Today's meeting between unions and the Education Minister will be critical in determining the future of negotiations. Teachers hope the pressure from tomorrow's strike will help secure a satisfactory agreement and prevent further mobilisations.
