Girona City Council has officially named a previously unnamed public space in the Pla de Palau, Sant Pau neighbourhood the Placeta de Ricard Masó i Llunes. The square is near Parc del Migdia, at the junction of Carrer de Barcelona and Carrer de Pau Vila i Dinarés.

The naming recognises Ricard Masó i Llunes, a Catalan cartographer, quantity surveyor, politician and cultural activist. Girona City Council said he was known for his commitment to Catalan culture and politics.

Masó i Llunes was one of the key figures behind the creation of the Premi Prudenci Bertrana, a literary award. He was also a leading authority in aerial cartography in the region.

The council said the new name gives a formal identity to an area that did not previously have one, and brings it further into the urban fabric of Pla de Palau, Sant Pau. It also follows the practice of naming public spaces after people who have made important contributions to Catalan society.
