The first signs for the 'Freedom Routes' were unveiled this weekend in Colera, Molinàs, and Llançà, located in the Alt Empordà region. This initiative, led by the Reeixida Foundation, the town councils of Colera and Llançà, the Democratic Memorial, and the Exile Memorial Museum, highlights historical border crossings.
The project's main goal is to recover and make visible the memory of these routes. They were used during the Second World War by individuals fleeing Nazism and Fascism, seeking refuge and passage to safety.
Preserving Wartime History
The 'Freedom Routes' mark paths that allowed many to escape persecution. The new signage will help educate the public about the region's role in humanitarian efforts during a dark period of European history. Officials said the collaboration between the various organisations was key to bringing this project to fruition.
Future plans include further development of the routes and additional educational programmes. These efforts aim to ensure the stories of those who used these paths, and those who helped them, are not forgotten.
