Figueres City Council and the University of Girona (UdG) have reactivated their collaboration agreement to promote the Chair of Contemporary Art and Culture, 20 years after its initial launch. This initiative, announced on 15 May 2026, aims to create a space for reflection, debate, and research on contemporary art and thought from a critical and interdisciplinary perspective.

The revival of the chair is part of Figueres' broader project to become a university city, enhancing its academic and cultural offerings. The programme will officially start on 10 June at the Empordà Museum.

The inaugural event will feature a conference by Patricia Mayayo, a leading figure in Spain for art history studies from a feminist perspective. Her participation highlights the chair's commitment to diverse and critical viewpoints within the contemporary art discussion.

The original collaboration sought to position Figueres as a centre for intellectual exchange. Its return is expected to bring new opportunities for students, researchers, and the public to engage with current trends and debates in art and culture.

Moving forward, the chair plans to organise a series of conferences, seminars, and research projects throughout the year. These activities will involve both local and international experts, further establishing Figueres as a significant cultural hub in Catalonia.
