Figueres, in the Alt Empordà area of Girona province, will host the Legends Figueres Cup this weekend, a new international veterans’ football tournament at Estadi de Vilatenim from 12 to 14 June.
The line-up includes veterans’ teams from Paris Saint-Germain, Olympique de Marseille, Leganés, Palamós and the Occitania Selection, alongside Unió Esportiva Figueres veterans. The opening match is set for Friday, 12 June, at 18:30, with Figueres facing PSG.
The tournament has a charity focus. All proceeds from donations will go to the Associació Centre de Lleure El Dofí, which supports people with intellectual disabilities in the Alt Empordà area. Members of El Dofí, some of whom play for Figueres Integra, the club’s team for players with intellectual disabilities, will act as ball boys during the matches.
Entry is free, and donations can be made on match days or through a fila zero bank account: ES53 2100 0415 0801 0082 5016. More on the club can be found on the news tag page.
Group stage matches will run on Saturday from 9:30 to 13:00 and from 17:00 to 19:15. The final stages will take place on Sunday morning, with semi-finals at 9:00 and the final at 13:30. Organisers say each match will last one hour.
The Agrupació de Veterans de la UE Figueres is organising the tournament, with support from Figueres City Council, Girona Provincial Council and UE Figueres, plus sponsorship from Pastisseria Òpera and Sidreria Txots. Organisers say they want to expand the event in future years by inviting more well-known teams.
