Figueres, in Catalonia’s Alt Empordà, will host a new international veterans’ football tournament this weekend, the Legends Figueres Cup. The event takes place at Estadi de Vilatenim from Friday, 12 June, to Sunday, 14 June, with teams including Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), Olympique Marseille and Leganés.
The tournament is organised by the UE Figueres Veterans Association. It also includes UE Figueres, Palamós and a selection from Occitania. All donations will go to Centre de Lleure El Dofí, an association that supports people with intellectual disabilities in Alt Empordà.
Members of El Dofí, some of whom play for Figueres Integra, the club’s team for players with intellectual disabilities, will act as ball boys during the matches. Entry is free, and donations for El Dofí can be made on match days or through a fila zero bank account.
The opening match is on Friday at 18:30, with UE Figueres facing PSG. Group-stage matches are scheduled for Saturday from 9:30 to 13:00 and 17:00 to 19:15. The final stages will be held on Sunday morning, with semi-finals starting at 9:00 and the final at 13:30. Each match will last one hour.
The Legends Figueres Cup has support from Figueres City Council, Girona Provincial Council and UE Figueres. Local sponsors include the Òpera pastry shop and Txots cider house. Organisers say they hope to grow the tournament in future years by attracting more well-known teams.
