In Figueres, Girona, a woman who says she was previously abused by the man accused in a recent femicide has posted a video online describing years of fear, shelter stays and alleged failures by authorities to protect her.

In the 6 minute, 44 second clip, she says she had to hide for years with a minor child, move through several shelters and live with threats against her and her family. She also says the Mossos d'Esquadra did nothing, and that she dealt with the situation alone.

She says the man continued the same behaviour after leaving prison, with complaints and restraining orders involving other women. She also says he returned to her home after being released during the Covid period, forcing her to leave again.

The woman uses the video to question how the justice system protects victims of domestic violence. She says reporting abuse can leave women alone while a case moves through the courts, and that police are not with them every hour of the day. She adds that she was lucky.

The video has renewed debate in Catalonia about how domestic violence complaints are handled and what support is available to victims. Authorities have not yet commented on the specific allegations made in the video. For related coverage, see our news page.
