The Terres de l'Ebre region, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2013, is working to maximise the benefits of this international environmental quality label. Officials believe there is still much to do for local products, tourism activities, and businesses to fully use the recognition.

The Consorci de Polítiques Ambientals de les Terres de l'Ebre (COPATE), the body managing the Biosphere Reserve, sees the label as a way to boost bioeconomy, innovation, and sustainable development. To this end, COPATE has organised a congress scheduled for 11 and 12 June.

Congress to Drive Sustainable Growth

The event will take place at Celler Vinyes del Convent in Horta de Sant Joan, a venue accredited by the Ebrebiosfera brand. The congress aims to explore how the Biosphere Reserve status can be better used to support local economic growth and environmental protection. The reserve's area is also in the process of being expanded to cover all four comarques in the region.

COPATE's focus on bioeconomy means promoting economic activities that use renewable biological resources from the land and sea. This includes sustainable agriculture, forestry, and fisheries, as well as the production of bio-based products and energy. The congress will likely discuss strategies to integrate these practices more deeply into the region's economy, helping local businesses gain more from the Biosphere Reserve status.
