A recent copper theft on the Rodalies rail network, occurring between Montcada i Reixac and Sant Andreu stations, caused substantial delays and complicated travel in Barcelona for much of Wednesday morning. The incident affected the R2, R2Nord, and R11 lines, which experienced average delays of up to 40 minutes for trains heading towards Barcelona.
Services travelling in the Granollers direction also saw delays of at least 30 minutes. To reduce disruption, some trains destined for Barcelona Airport ended their journeys at Sants station, according to Renfe officials. Passengers were advised to use "alternative modes of transport" to reach Bellvitge, El Prat, and the airport stations.
Impact on Commuters
The repeated thefts of copper from the rail infrastructure continue to be a significant problem for Catalonia's transport system. Such incidents not only cause inconvenience for thousands of daily commuters but also lead to considerable repair costs and service interruptions. The affected lines connect key areas, including the city centre and the airport, making their smooth operation essential for regional mobility.
This latest theft follows a pattern of similar incidents that have plagued the Rodalies network. Authorities are working to address the issue, which often involves organised groups targeting valuable metal for resale. The ongoing nature of these thefts suggests a need for enhanced security measures along the railway lines.
Moving forward, Renfe and Adif, the railway infrastructure manager, will likely review their security protocols to prevent future occurrences. The aim is to minimise the impact on passengers and ensure the reliability of public transport services across the Barcelona metropolitan area.
