CB Igualada’s women’s team opened their Liga Femenina 2 promotion play-off campaign with a narrow 51-52 defeat to Pozuelo in Jerez de la Frontera, a result shaped by a late timekeeping problem, according to Regió 7.

The key incident came with nine seconds left in Igualada’s final possession. The scorer’s table buzzer sounded without reason, and after consultations the possession was reduced to seven seconds before being counted manually because of a scoreboard malfunction. Igualada then had to take their final shot without knowing the exact time remaining, and the attempt missed.

The game had been tight throughout. Igualada led by small margins in the first half, with a three-pointer from Naia Puente putting them 19-12 ahead at one stage. Pozuelo stayed in touch and trailed by only three at the break, helped by Martina Narro’s nine points.

Coach Joan Albert Cuadrat said the team lacked accuracy from two-point range. Igualada finished 6 of 27 on two-point shots and missed ten free throws, which proved costly in a match decided by one point.

Igualada also built a six-point lead in the third quarter, at 34-28, but could not hold it. The period ended level at 38-38, and Pozuelo later moved five points clear at 45-50. Two free throws from Tajahuerce brought Igualada back to 51-52 with 23 seconds left.

Elsewhere in the group, Loiola Indautxu beat Gran Canaria 51-53. Igualada’s next match is against the Basque side on Friday, 5 June, at 13:15. Gran Canaria and Pozuelo meet earlier, at 11am. The top team in the group will earn direct promotion to Liga Femenina 2, while the second-placed side will go into a play-off on Sunday against the runner-up from the other group, also in Jerez.
