Baptisms in Catalonia rose by 10.5% in 2024, according to the annual report from the Tarraconense Episcopal Conference. The region recorded 14,190 baptisms, up from 12,835 in 2023.
The increase breaks a downward trend that had continued since at least 2017, the earliest year for which the report provides data. It also comes despite the continued fall in birth rates in recent years.
By contrast, first communions and Catholic weddings both continued to decline in 2024. The report says each fell by about 3% compared with the previous year.
The figures come from the Tarraconense Episcopal Conference’s annual review of Catholic activity in Catalonia. It offers the latest available snapshot of how different religious rites are changing across the region.
