Carles Porta’s first fiction series, 33 Días, premieres in June, with part of the production filmed in Tarragona prison. The series is inspired by the real-life 2001 escape of inmates Manuel Brito and Javier Picatoste from Ponent prison in Lleida.

The dramatised story follows the events after their escape, which led to a major police chase across Catalonia. For more than a month, Brito and Picatoste avoided capture, while the Mossos d’Esquadra, the Policía Nacional and the Guardia Civil remained on alert.

Porta is best known for his work in true crime, and 33 Días marks his move into fiction. The series keeps close to the kind of real-world cases that have shaped his reputation, while presenting them in a scripted format.

Filming in Tarragona gives the series a local setting that matches the story’s prison backdrop. For readers following Catalonia’s television coverage, this is one of the most notable new releases linked to the region this month.
