Cardona, in Catalonia, will host an international congress on salt from 4 to 7 June, bringing more than 60 specialists from ten countries to the town. The meeting, titled Salt, Heritage and Future, will focus on the mineral’s past, present and future.
The congress will take place in the Gothic Hall of Cardona Castle. Experts from Germany, Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, France, Italy, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Spain are expected to attend. The programme will cover geological, historical, cultural, economic and environmental aspects of salt.
Geologists will explain how Cardona’s salt mines formed. Historians will look at how the resource was used over the centuries. Tourism specialists will also present proposals for the Cardona Salt Mountain Cultural Park. The event includes round tables, workshops and guided visits to the salt mine and the Cardona Salt Museum.
The congress is part of the 25th anniversary events for the Cardona Salt Mountain’s declaration as a Cultural Park. That designation recognised its geological features and historical importance, and it has helped draw visitors to the area for decades.
The organisers want the meeting to build an international network for knowledge and cooperation around salt. They also aim to strengthen Cardona’s position in this field.
