Bàsquet Girona is in the running for a wild card place in the EuroCup, the second-tier European basketball competition, after the ECA Owners Board announced the next steps in the selection process today.
The Girona club is one of several sides hoping to secure one of the available places, alongside Burgos, Hamburg, Cibona and Legia. Manresa and Tenerife, both from Spain’s ACB league, have already confirmed their spots.
The EuroCup is set to expand to 32 teams, split into four groups of eight. Sixteen teams will move on to the final phase, with the round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final all played as best-of-three series.
Selection has been based on clubs’ final standings in their domestic leagues. Twenty-two clubs have already received five-year long-term licences and special invitations, and the final special invitation is expected soon.
If Bàsquet Girona does not receive the EuroCup wild card, the club says it will compete in the FIBA Europe Cup instead. The decision is expected in the coming weeks and will shape Girona’s European season ahead.
