Barcelona, Catalonia, has been named the World Capital of Architecture for 2026 by UNESCO and the International Union of Architects. This designation will see a wide range of activities take place across the city from 12 February to 13 December 2026.
The programme aims to inform citizens about the values and transformative power of architecture, urban planning, and landscaping. One of the main events planned is the International Union of Architects (UIA) Congress, scheduled from 28 June to 2 July, with the Tres Xemeneies (Three Chimneys) in Sant Adrià de Besòs serving as its central hub.
Celebrating Architecture's Impact
Throughout the year, residents and visitors will have opportunities to engage with architectural themes. The events are designed to highlight how architecture shapes daily life and contributes to urban development. This recognition places Barcelona at the forefront of global architectural discourse for the entire year.
The UIA Congress is expected to draw architects and urban planners from around the world, fostering discussions on future trends and challenges in the field. The selection of the Tres Xemeneies as the congress epicentre reflects a focus on industrial heritage and its potential for regeneration.
