Around 270 people gathered in Barcelona on Saturday, 9 May, to support activists from the Global Sumud Flotilla detained by Israel, according to figures from the Guàrdia Urbana de Barcelona. The demonstration specifically called for the release of Spanish national Saif Abukeshek and Brazilian national Thiago Ávila.

The protest took place after Spain's Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, confirmed earlier that day that Abukeshek's release would happen in the "next few hours". Despite this announcement, demonstrators insisted on continued pressure until both activists were safely home.

Pablo Castilla, a spokesperson for the Global Sumud Flotilla, welcomed the news of the activists' impending release. However, he stressed that the group would remain watchful. Castilla stated, "We cannot tolerate the government not taking any measures against a state that has kidnapped a Catalan citizen."

Saif Abukeshek's wife, Sally Issa, urged participants to continue their mobilisation for the Palestinian people. She also called for efforts "to break the blockade of Gaza, pressure the Spanish Government and the European Union so that we have all the Palestinian people free."

March Route and Slogans

The march began at 12:00 on Passeig de Gràcia, outside the European Parliament office. It then proceeded along part of Carrer València, concluding around 13:45 at the junction with Carrer Roger de Llúria.

During the demonstration, participants chanted slogans such as 'Freedom Thiago, freedom Saif', 'Israel murders, Europe sponsors', and 'Israel Zionist state, terrorist state'. Banners were also displayed with messages including 'Enough of the European Union's complicity with Israel, freedom Thiago and Saif' and 'Let's bring down Israel and Zionism'.

Organisers plan to monitor the situation closely, awaiting the confirmed return of both activists. Further actions may be considered depending on the outcome of the releases and broader governmental responses to the Gaza blockade.
