A protest was held in Barcelona on 2 May 2026, demanding the release of Catalan-Palestinian activist Saïm Abú Keixec and Brazilian Thiago Ávila. Both were detained by the Israeli army after their flotilla, heading to Gaza, was intercepted.

The demonstration took place at 7pm in front of the European Commission's headquarters at Passeig de Gràcia 90. The CUP political party called for the mobilisation, stating on X, "We point out the accomplices in this violation of international law and human rights." The protest received support from several organisations, including Intersindical Alternativa de Catalunya (IAC), to which Abú Keixec is affiliated, the Palestinian Community of Catalonia, Prou Complicitat amb Israel, the Catalan group of the Global Sumud Flotilla, and Open Arms. ERC also supported the concentration.

Allegations of Torture and Diplomatic Action

The Global Sumud Flotilla reported that Abú Keixec and Ávila were transferred from Greece to Israel. Both activists claim they suffered torture at the hands of the Israeli army. According to a statement released by the organisation, they were forced onto the Israeli ship Nahshon, which has since left Greek waters and is en route to Israeli territory.

Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares stated that the Spanish consul in Tel Aviv planned to visit Abú Keixec that afternoon. Albares could not confirm the torture allegations but noted that several activists who disembarked in Crete required medical attention. He called for Abú Keixec's release, describing his detention as illegal, and confirmed no knowledge of any links between Abú Keixec and Hamas. However, Albares stressed that any suspicions about a citizen should be investigated through proper legal channels. He also highlighted that Israel "has not provided any evidence."

Flotilla Interception Details

The flotilla, comprising twenty-two vessels and 174 activists, was intercepted by the Israeli army in international waters on Thursday. Most participants disembarked on the island of Crete on Friday, with the exception of Ávila and Abú Keixec. Some of those who disembarked were taken to medical centres, while the others proceeded to Heraklion airport to begin repatriation.
