Barcelona City Council has started waterproofing work on the Twin Fountains in Plaça Catalunya. This project is necessary to ensure the fountains operate correctly and to stop water leaks, according to the City Council.

As a result of this work, the fountains will be out of service from 4 May until approximately the end of June. The exact completion date depends on how the work progresses and weather conditions, as the tasks need to be carried out in dry conditions.

The planned work includes emptying the fountain basins, dismantling fountain components, sealing cracks, renewing the interior paving, and applying a full waterproofing treatment. This will fix the detected leaks and ensure the fountains work well once the repairs are complete.

Previous Renovations and Features

An earlier full renovation of the fountains took place in 2015 to improve their efficiency and lighting system. Among other upgrades, a remote control system was installed to monitor hydraulic elements, safety systems, energy consumption, and water quality. This system also manages the programming for the light, water, and music shows.

The Twin Fountains, which restarted operation in April 2025 after drought restrictions, are two ornamental fountains in Plaça Catalunya. They are located near the gallery of statues from the 1929 Universal Exposition. This monumental complex, built in 1959, was designed by Espiau Seoane.

The fountains consist of two symmetrical basins and two technical rooms located beneath the square, accessible from the transport interchange. Over the years, these fountains have become a distinctive feature of the city centre's urban landscape.

Looking Ahead

The current waterproofing efforts aim to address long-standing issues and prepare the fountains for continued public enjoyment. Once the work is finished, residents and visitors will once again be able to experience the full light, water, and music displays, ensuring the Twin Fountains remain a central attraction in Barcelona.
