A total of 284 individuals took part in the second annual Barcelona metro charity stair climb on Saturday, raising over €17,000 for a children's cancer association. Participants ascended the 419 steps connecting the platform to the vestibule of the El Coll/La Teixonera metro station on Line L5, according to Europa Press Barcelona.
The event, organised by the TMB Foundation and TransPerfect Mountain Challenge, will donate all proceeds to the Associació de Familiars i Amics de Nens Oncològics de Catalunya (AFANOC), which translates to the Association of Relatives and Friends of Children with Cancer of Catalonia. Donations remain open until 31 May, TMB stated in a press release.
Challenging Ascent for a Cause
Competitors started their ascent from the metro network's deepest station, situated 60 metres underground. They began in groups of 24, with four participants starting every minute. Victor Saavedra claimed victory in the men's category, while Gemma Pallarès won the women's category.
The El Coll/La Teixonera station is known for its significant depth, making it a unique location for such a physical challenge. The event combines athletic endeavour with community support, directly benefiting families affected by childhood cancer across Catalonia.
Moving forward, the organisers hope to build on this year's success, with further details on future editions expected after the donation period closes. The funds collected will help AFANOC continue its work providing support and resources to young cancer patients and their families.
