Diputació de Barcelona, Barcelona’s provincial council, plans to continue funding La Bressola after the network marked its 50th anniversary at the Palau Reial de Perpinyà on Wednesday 16 September.
The support is intended to help sustain nine Catalan-language schools in Northern Catalonia, serving 1,100 pupils. For families using the network in the Rosselló and Conflent areas, it supports the continued provision of education where Catalan is the main language used in school and social life.
Representatives of the council’s Education Area attended the anniversary event, organised by the Generalitat de Catalunya, La Bressola and the Associació d’Amics de La Bressola, with local institutional support.
Funding agreement covers 2025 to 2028
The council’s annual contributions to La Bressola for 2025–2028 form part of a joint commitment by Catalonia’s four provincial councils. The stated purpose is to support the financial sustainability of the school network in Northern Catalonia.
Founded in 1976, La Bressola operates seven nursery and primary schools and two secondary schools. Its teaching model employs 100 staff across schools in Rosselló and Conflent.
The anniversary programme began with an event in Barcelona in February and will continue on Friday 25 September with the 50th Anniversary Concert at the Teatre Municipal de Girona.
Council also funds Catalan-language work locally
Since 2025, Diputació de Barcelona has been a full member of the Consorci per a la Normalització Lingüística, the public consortium that supports the learning and use of Catalan. Under that membership, the council contributes €400,000 a year from 2025 to 2028.
In 2026, the council has also set out a strategy to increase the use of Catalan through awareness, training and support measures for local-authority technical staff and municipal school professionals.
