Barcelona has activated its Municipal Emergency Action Plan after forecasts of heavy rain, with Civil Protection placing the city on alert on the evening of 4 June 2026.

The Barcelona City Council said the plan was triggered because of the risk of drainage problems during intense rainfall. Residents are being asked to follow safety advice while the weather system passes through the city.

People are advised to check roofs, lightning rods, drains and downpipes, and to clear away any debris. The council also recommends disconnecting electrical appliances, moving outdoor furniture and other items that could be carried away by water, and bringing pets indoors. Toxic products should be stored safely away from water.

For household preparedness, the council says residents should keep essential items close at hand, including a mobile phone and charger, any necessary medication, warm clothing and personal identification documents.

Drivers are being urged to take extra care in wet conditions. Advice includes reducing speed, braking gently, keeping a safe distance from other vehicles and avoiding flooded areas. If conditions become unsafe, motorists should pull over and wait until the weather improves.

Barcelona City Council will continue to monitor the situation and issue updates if needed. For more local coverage, see our news page.
