Amposta, in the Montsià region, has started installing new CCTV cameras across the city, with the first unit placed last week in the Castell and Celòquia area, near the Ebre river in the old quarter.
The city council plans to invest €71,000 in these surveillance cameras throughout 2026. Officials from the Consistory said five more cameras will be installed at different access points to the municipality in the coming weeks. Three additional units are planned for isolated areas and strategic locations within the city.
Further investment includes seven cameras for Plaça Ramon Bereguer IV, also known as Plaça del Mercat. These will feature both video surveillance and vehicle number plate readers.
Expanding City Surveillance
This initiative is part of the municipal budget's planned investment for this year, aiming to improve traffic surveillance and protect municipal buildings. The cameras are seen as a deterrent to potential crimes and are intended to help residents feel safer.
Amposta first installed CCTV cameras in late 2023 at the C-12 road roundabout and on Avinguda Alcalde Palau, at the entrance via the Pont Penjant. This initial phase involved a €19,000 investment and had a dual purpose: traffic control and enhancing overall municipal security.
According to the municipal government, these initial devices have been critical in helping to resolve various criminal incidents in Amposta and nearby municipalities since their installation almost three years ago.
Moving forward, the city council will continue to roll out the new cameras, with installations expected in key areas over the next few weeks and months, as part of its ongoing commitment to public safety and infrastructure protection.
