Amposta's local council unanimously approved a proposal on 28 April to request the Generalitat de Catalunya award the Creu de Sant Jordi to APASA, an organisation supporting people with intellectual disabilities. The request coincides with APASA's nearly 50 years of service in the Terres de l'Ebre region.

Amposta's mayor, Adam Tomàs, highlighted APASA's work since 1976, which includes education, sport, residential care, job placement, and direct support. APASA started when parents united to address unmet needs for their children with intellectual disabilities.

Since then, the organisation has grown to become a key player in Amposta and across Catalonia. Tomàs noted APASA's pioneering initiatives, such as Snoezelen multi-sensory rooms, and its consistent focus on full integration for children, young people, and adults.

New Street Cleaning Contract Approved

The council also approved a new tender for the city's street cleaning service. This contract represents an investment of over €6 million across the next five years.

The vote saw opposition from Som Amposta, abstentions from non-aligned councillor Èric Esteban and Junts per Amposta, and support from non-aligned councillor Àngel Martínez and ERC. The previous contract, which combined street cleaning and gardening, ended in July 2024 and had been extended while the new tender was prepared.

The new tender separates the two services into distinct contracts. The updated model aims to increase manual cleaning with more on-foot operators and trolleys, while maintaining mechanised services like sweepers, washers, and water cleaning. The government expects the new service to start on 1 September.

Motions on Early Childhood Education and Agriculture

During the April plenary session, two motions presented by Junts per Amposta were debated and approved. The first motion, titled 'Municipal Commitment for the improvement of 0-3 years early childhood education', received support from opposition groups. Esquerra d'Amposta abstained due to disagreements over the funding considerations in the text.

Another motion, 'Municipal Commitment for the defence and continuity of the Delegation of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food in Amposta', was unanimously approved by all municipal groups.
