The Alt Empordà region in Girona has started a month-long programme of activities to raise public awareness against elder abuse. The campaign, which runs throughout May, includes talks, workshops, and a public walk across various municipalities in the area.

The main goal of this initiative is to highlight a problem often kept quiet. It also aims to promote the prevention and detection of elder abuse. Organisers want to make society aware of how important it is to respect the rights of older people and ensure their well-being.

Raising Awareness Across the Region

The planned activities are varied and designed to reach a wide audience. Informative talks are being held by professionals specialising in geriatrics and the rights of older people. Practical workshops will also teach participants how to identify signs of abuse and how to respond to such situations.

One of the campaign's main events will be a public walk on Saturday, 18 May, starting from Plaça Major in Castelló d’Empúries. This activity is intended as a gathering point for participants to show their commitment to defending the rights of older people.

Community Collaboration

The initiative is led by the Alt Empordà Comarcal Council and involves several local councils, social organisations, and associations for older people. The Comarcal Council has stressed the importance of society-wide involvement to stop elder abuse and promote dignified, healthy ageing.

Those interested in taking part in any of the activities can find the full schedule on the Alt Empordà Comarcal Council's website or at the municipal offices of the respective local councils.
