Aldi, the German supermarket chain, is set to open eight new stores in Catalonia during 2026. The first new supermarket will open on 13 May in Plaça d'Espanya, Montcada i Reixac, followed by another in June on Carrer de Bac de Roda in Barcelona's Sant Martí neighbourhood.

The company will also reopen its store at number 60 Carrer del Comerç in Barcelona's El Born district. This location, next to the cultural space of the old market, has been closed for renovations. These initial investments will bring Aldi's total number of establishments in Catalonia to 110 and its workforce close to 1,500 employees, according to company plans.

With the first two inaugurations, Aldi's commercial network in Barcelona province will strengthen, reaching 78 establishments there. This expansion plan means that 22% of the chain's stores in Spain will be located in Catalonia.

Growth in Workforce and Customer Base

Over the past three years, Aldi has increased its staff in Catalonia by 18%, adding 270 new employees. By the end of 2025, the company had a team of over 1,450 workers, with further growth expected as new stores open. This expansion is also reflected in customer numbers; recent company data shows that more than 1.4 million Catalan families shop at Aldi supermarkets, meaning the chain serves nearly half of all households in Catalonia.

Aldi's business model focuses on discounts, with own-brand products making up 90% of its offerings. For fresh food, the company states it works with over 70 local suppliers, acquiring more than 190 products. This means 24% of Aldi's suppliers are Catalan firms.
