Viladrau, a village in Osona, offers visitors a blend of natural beauty and historical intrigue, according to El Periódico CA. Located just 30 minutes from Vic, the village is a popular destination for those looking to connect with nature and explore its unique past.

The village is home to several iconic routes within the Montseny Natural Park, making it a key spot for hiking enthusiasts. Beyond its natural attractions, Viladrau's historic centre features stone streets, the Plaça Major, Sant Martí church, and the Arborètum, a botanical garden.

One of the most recommended hiking options is the Ruta de les Fonts, or 'Route of the Fountains'. This trail is suitable for all ages due to its low difficulty and features dozens of natural waterfalls. Viladrau is situated about an hour and a half from Barcelona, making it accessible for day trips.

A Village with a Legendary Past

Viladrau also draws history enthusiasts, as it was the site of Catalonia's largest witch hunt. Between 1600 and 1622, 14 women were killed in the village. Imma Gómez, Viladrau's Culture Councillor in 2015, recounted a significant event from this period.

“They say that on the night of 2 November 1617, there was a meeting of witches in the Sant Segimon forests,” Gómez told El Periódico in 2015. “They made potions, applied ointments, drank plant infusions and reached ecstasy. A few days later, a tremendous hailstorm destroyed all the crops, and from then on, there was a witch hunt, with the women blamed for that disaster.”

Visitors today can explore the village's historical sites and natural surroundings, reflecting on both its serene beauty and its dramatic past. The local authorities continue to promote Viladrau as a destination that combines outdoor activities with cultural heritage.
