Disciplinary Process Underway
The Ajuntament de Terrassa has initiated a sanctioning procedure against Alicia Tomás, the local councillor and spokesperson for the far-right party Vox, following a formal complaint by SOS Racisme. The case stems from a video posted by Tomás on social media platform X on 23 January 2026, which the organisation alleges contains "criminalising, stigmatising and discriminatory" content targeting 13 people relocated from the former B9 institute in Badalona to the Roc Blanc hostel in Terrassa. According to SOS Racisme, the video, which remains online with over 5,000 views, refers to the displaced individuals as "illegal squatters" and describes Terrassa as becoming a "social dumping ground for other municipalities." The group also accuses Tomás of demanding priority housing for Spanish nationals while criticising public funds being used for homeless accommodation.
Alleged Breaches of Democratic Coexistence Ordinance
SOS Racisme argues that the video violates multiple provisions of Terrassa’s Ordenança de Bases de Convivència Democràtica a la Ciutat, particularly through repeated use of the term "squatters" in a derogatory manner, generalising a diverse group as inherently illegal or socially harmful. The group states this contributes to a narrative of "invasion" and frames racialised communities as a threat, reinforcing exclusionary rhetoric. Under the ordinance, such conduct could incur fines of up to €2,000 for messages undermining personal dignity or containing xenophobic or racist content. Additionally, if found to have caused “significant disruption to community life,” the penalty could rise to €3,000.
The criminalisation and discrimination form a manipulative discourse aimed at stigmatising those receiving shelter and discrediting public policies for non-native populations.
The municipality confirmed it has informed Tomás of the ongoing investigation, which is currently in the instruction phase.
History of Controversial Statements
This is not the first time Tomás has faced scrutiny for public remarks. Since October 2021, the Terrassa council’s legal services have systematically reported her public statements to the Terrassa Prosecutor’s Office, particularly those made on social media. In March 2025, she posed outside the Islamic Community Al Umma headquarters wearing a T-shirt stating "Mohammed not welcome," ahead of a demonstration against what she called the "Islamisation" of Terrassa. That event, held on 22 March 2025, drew around 214 attendees, mostly affiliated with far-right groups from other towns.
Residents Can Report Hate Incidents
Terrassa residents affected by racism or hate speech can report incidents via the municipal Servei d'atenció i denúncia per a les víctimes de racisme (SAiD). Individuals can also request police monitoring for community safety issues related to public order or breaches of the coexistence ordinance through the municipal service portal.
