Around 50 people gathered in Sabadell on Wednesday morning to protest against the presence of a Mossos d'Esquadra officer at the Joan Sallarès i Pla school. The institution is the only one in Vallès Occidental included in a Generalitat pilot plan to assign a police agent to a school.
The protest, organised by the Sabadell Educational Assembly, criticised the government's measure. Organisers argued that schools need more professional resources to support students, not police officers in classrooms. They said this policy leads to the stigmatisation of the centre and the targeting of students.
Community Opposes Police Plan
The collective read a manifesto at 8am at the secondary school entrance. Half an hour later, they moved to the primary school entrance during the student reception time. Officials at the Joan Sallarès i Pla school declined to comment on the pilot plan, according to reports.
This demonstration highlights growing concerns among educational communities in Catalonia regarding the role of law enforcement within school environments. Opponents of the plan believe that introducing police officers could create a less inclusive atmosphere for students, particularly those from vulnerable backgrounds. They advocate for alternative approaches focused on social workers, psychologists, and educational support staff to address student needs.
Moving forward, the Sabadell Educational Assembly and similar groups are expected to continue their advocacy. They aim to pressure the Generalitat to reconsider its pilot programme and invest in non-policing resources for schools across Catalonia.
