Hospital Universitari Sant Joan de Reus, located in Reus, has become the sole centre in the Tarragona region to conduct Phase I oncology clinical trials, according to officials. These studies involve administering new, unmarketed drugs to humans for the first time.

This development provides a significant opportunity for patients in the Camp de Tarragona area, who previously had to travel to Barcelona to access such experimental treatments. The trials open doors to targeted therapies designed to combat specific tumour alterations.

Since January, Hospital Sant Joan has been participating in a clinical trial for a drug aimed at treating the PIK3CA mutation, found in some breast cancers. Currently, no targeted treatment exists for this particular mutation.

Expanding Treatment Options for Patients

The introduction of Phase I trials at Hospital Sant Joan represents a move towards more localised advanced cancer care. Patients can now access cutting-edge research closer to home, potentially reducing the burden of travel during an already challenging time. The focus on specific genetic mutations in tumours reflects a broader trend in oncology towards personalised medicine, where treatments are tailored to the unique characteristics of a patient's cancer.

This initiative builds on the hospital's existing capabilities and its commitment to improving patient outcomes through research. The ability to test drugs never before used in humans positions Reus as a key player in the development of future cancer therapies within Catalonia.

Future of Oncology Research in Tarragona

Moving forward, the hospital plans to continue expanding its participation in such trials, offering more experimental options for various cancer types. This will likely attract further research investment and collaboration, strengthening the region's position in medical innovation. The success of these initial trials could pave the way for more widespread access to advanced treatments across the province.
