Japanese medical multinational Nipro will invest €25 million to build a new plant in Lleida, relocating and expanding its current operations from Mollerussa. The new facility, situated in the Torre Solé industrial park, is expected to start operations in 2028 and will become one of Nipro's main European production centres for dialysis liquid.

Nipro, a global leader in medical devices, dialysis equipment, and pharmaceuticals, has acquired land in the Torre Solé industrial park, on the outskirts of Lleida. Company sources told Segre that the location was chosen for its "excellent logistical connectivity, the availability of talent, and the capacity to support Nipro's long-term operational and growth ambitions in the region."

The move involves transferring Nipro's existing Mollerussa plant, which currently produces dialysis liquid. The company described the project as a "relocation and expansion of current operations" within the Lleida area.

Boosting Production Capacity

While Nipro did not specify the exact number of new jobs, it stated that the project is expected to generate "new employment opportunities over time as operations continue to grow." The company's website indicates its Mollerussa plant currently employs over forty people. Nipro's priority is to "preserve and strengthen" its activities in the area, with the modern production centre supporting "sustainable long-term development."

The new plant will continue to produce the same products as the Mollerussa facility: acid concentrates for haemodialysis and bicarbonate cartridges. These are essential for dialysis treatment in patients with severe kidney failure. The new facilities will improve operational efficiency, technology, and capacity, allowing Nipro to meet increasing market demand. The company explained that while the Mollerussa factory has "served the company well" until now, its "limited surface area and infrastructure restrict future expansion possibilities."

Nipro emphasised that the new Lleida plant will be one of its primary production centres in Europe for haemodialysis concentrates and bicarbonate cartridges. This initiative also reaffirms Nipro's commitment to maintaining industrial activity in Catalonia.

Project Planning and Future Steps

The project is currently in the planning and permit application phase. It has been in development for some time and was managed by the Invest in Lleida and Talent Office, established by Lleida City Council to attract investment. The establishment of the Nipro plant will mean the privately promoted Torre Solé industrial park is almost fully occupied.

Nipro Renal Care, a division of Japan-based Nipro Corporation, produces equipment and products related to dialysis treatment. Founded in Osaka in 1954 as a glass tube manufacturer, Nipro later specialised in the health sector, focusing on dialysis, injection systems, and artificial organs. The company operates in over sixty countries across five continents and employs more than 38,000 people.
