Manresa is at the centre of questions over how collected cardboard is being handled, after Junts per Catalunya asked the city council to prove that the material is being recycled and not sent to landfill.
The party has requested urgent explanations from the local government, led by ERC, PSC and Impulsem. It warned that if residents have been charged for environmental management that did not take place, that would amount to a serious case of fraud.
In a statement, Junts said there has been talk for weeks that hundreds of tonnes of cardboard may have been sent to the Can Ono landfill without being recycled. The party said that, if confirmed, this would be a serious irresponsibility and a deception of citizens.
Junts also said the council had promised rigorous and efficient waste management, but that this promise now appears not to be being kept. It called for transparency and speed in resolving the matter, and said public money should not be wasted or the environment put at risk because of poor management.
The council had not issued a public response at the time of writing. For readers following local politics across Catalonia, this case adds to wider scrutiny of municipal waste management and how recycling services are monitored.
