Three opposition groups in Lloret de Mar are demanding a public appearance from Mayor Adrià Lamelas after he travelled to Ibiza during a period of severe weather alerts over the weekend. ERC, Junts and Tots per Lloret issued a joint statement on Wednesday 7 October, criticising the mayor’s decision to proceed with a private trip despite official warnings and questioning who assumed political responsibility in his absence.
The groups learned of the trip through reporting by Girona Notícies and say more than 48 hours have passed since the news emerged without any public explanation from Lamelas. They stress that the municipality activated the emergency phase of the Pla INUNCAT due to extreme rainfall forecasts, prompting the council to suspend activities and urge residents not to travel unless essential.
If you ask Lloret residents not to move unless necessary, it's hard to understand why the mayor chooses to maintain a leisure trip outside the municipality.
At the time Lamelas left, meteorological alerts were already in place warning of a particularly serious weather event. According to the opposition, he did not formally delegate mayoral responsibilities nor inform councillors or department heads of his absence. While they clarify that leaving for under 24 hours without delegation is not illegal under municipal rules, they argue it falls short of expected institutional conduct during an announced emergency.
The groups insist that transparency and formal continuity of governance should have been ensured. They point out that the mayoral role cannot be placed on hold, even temporarily, given its centrality to municipal leadership in crises. The AEMET issued weather warnings for Lloret de Mar during this period, visible on its public forecast page.
Call for Accountability
ERC, Junts and Tots per Lloret are calling for Lamelas to publicly clarify when he left and returned, why he maintained the trip despite the alerts, why he did not formally delegate authority, and who effectively exercised mayoral duties during his absence.
We’re not interested in where he spends his free time or with whom. We want to know who was acting as mayor of Lloret while Lloret was in emergency mode.
They argue that the situation reflects a broader expectation of accountability: "The mayor’s office is not just a position. It is a responsibility, especially when things get complicated."
