Igualada, in central Catalonia, is seeing political consensus emerge around the Transversal Railway Axis project, with local parties uniting to demand a direct train link to Barcelona. This follows the Catalan government's decision to reactivate the project and prioritise the Igualada-Barcelona section.

The Socialist Party of Catalonia (PSC) in Igualada welcomed the renewed focus. Jordi Riba, the PSC's first secretary in the Anoia capital, stated that it is "very good news that the Generalitat has decided to move forward with the project and that the Igualada-Barcelona section is now prioritised, as it is a historic demand of the city and the region."

Project History and Economic Impact

Riba recalled that the Transversal Railway Axis project was initially approved in 2009. However, it was halted in 2011 due to a lack of funding. With the project now reactivated, the PSC hopes it can become a reality within a reasonable timeframe.

The PSC highlighted the importance of this railway section for connecting the Anoia region with Barcelona. Officials said it would improve the mobility of people and goods, and help boost the region's economy.

The socialist party has called for unity among all political and social actors to work together on achieving this project, which it considers key for the future of the Anoia region.
