Barcelona's iconic Sagrada Família basilica received significant international attention when the popular US television programme Good Morning America dedicated a five-minute, 37-second live segment to its ongoing construction.
Michael Strahan, a former American football star and current co-presenter of the ABC programme, served as a special correspondent in Barcelona. He offered a glowing report on Antoni Gaudí's temple. This focus is unsurprising, given that American tourists were the largest national group among the 2.8 million visitors to the basilica in 2025, according to the Sagrada Família's latest annual report.
Exploring the Basilica's Design
Strahan first toured various parts of the temple with Mauricio Cortés, one of the architects overseeing the works. Cortés discussed the temple's height, noting that Gaudí deliberately kept it lower than Montjuïc mountain, as he did not wish to challenge God. They also spoke about the main nave's changing appearance, influenced by light filtering through the stained-glass windows. The realistic biblical figures on the Nativity Façade were also highlighted; many were based on local residents who volunteered their features for Gaudí's moulds.
After this initial look at the temple's current state, which is the tallest in the Christian world, and with spectacular drone footage, Strahan connected live with the studio presenters. He shared a detail that likely intrigued viewers: the recent birth of falcon chicks in one of the Passion Façade towers.
Growing Global Recognition
This prominent appearance on a global media platform follows a major feature in National Geographic magazine in March, which included a cover story and an extensive report. The basilica expects even greater notoriety and tourist demand with the Pope's visit to Barcelona in June. The Pope is scheduled to bless the new Jesus tower, an event anticipated to be a much larger showcase for the temple.
