Illegal Tyre Disposal Tracked to Nearby Workshop

The Ajuntament de Girona has opened a sanction procedure against a vehicle workshop for abandoning approximately 20 used tyres on public land in the Pont Major neighbourhood. The incident was reported by local residents in September 2026, prompting an inspection by municipal environmental officers. Authorities found the tyres left beside an intelligent container area, with no containment measures in place. According to the city council, this constitutes a serious breach of Girona’s municipal waste management ordinance, which explicitly excludes industrial waste such as used tyres from the municipal collection service.

Fine Proposed Under Waste Regulations

The council has proposed a penalty of €5,001. Identification markings on the dumped tyres enabled officials to trace them to a business located in a municipality within Girona’s urban area, though not within the city itself. Under Spanish and Catalan waste regulations, automotive businesses are legally required to manage their own industrial waste and deliver it to authorised waste managers. Leaving such materials in public spaces is prohibited.

The improper disposal of industrial waste like used tyres, motor oil or batteries is the sole responsibility of the business generating it.

Sergi Cot, councillor for Climate Action, thanked residents for their vigilance and stressed that compliance with waste rules is mandatory. He added that the council will act firmly on such cases, as non-compliance affects the entire community.

Sanction Process Now Underway

The sanction procedure has now formally begun and will determine whether the proposed fine is ultimately imposed. The case will be handled under the authority of relevant municipal departments, with oversight as defined in the transparency portal’s listing of sanctioning bodies for traffic and public space matters. Residents are reminded that the new waste collection model across Girona, including in Pont Major, includes enhanced monitoring. Municipal Police patrols have been reinforced to deter illegal dumping, with fines of up to €600 possible for leaving waste outside designated containers under the updated system.
