Investigation launched after prison data breach
The Catalan Department of Justice is investigating an unauthorised access incident at Puig de les Basses prison in Figueres, Girona, where prisoners gained access to shared network documentation. The Generalitat confirmed that the individuals suspected of the breach have been identified. The Agency for Cybersecurity of Catalonia is currently analysing the incident to determine its scope and potential consequences. According to official statements, there has been no impact on critical information systems or on the operational functioning of the prison.
Security measures reinforced
The General Directorate for Penitentiary Affairs has strengthened security protocols across correctional facilities to prevent further incidents. Director General Domingo Estepa met with trade union representatives on Wednesday to brief them on the situation. Trade union UGT Presons has called for full transparency, demanding that prison staff be informed about which data may have been compromised. In a statement reported by Europa Press, the union said it held an extraordinary meeting with the General Directorate and Mossos d'Esquadra to assess the breach's extent and to press for staff notification.
The incident is under active investigation, and measures are being reinforced to prevent recurrence.
The prison in Figueres, located on the Puig de les Basses hill, houses inmates in a facility managed under the oversight of the Department of Justice. The Arxiu Comarcal de l'Alt Empordà, located at Plaça de l'Escorxador s/n, is a separate public institution and is not involved in the incident.
